Challow v M.C.C

Sunday August 19th.

An excellent day, fantastic weather, lovely food, good beer and the cricket wasn't bad either. Echoing John's theme of how far we have progressed over the 30 years into our residence at Challow. My first game was away to Swindon Nalgo and for the next 7 years all games were played away, not the luxury of a home ground for us. All this against a variable quality ofView from the drinkers gallery opposition and even more extremes in the playing conditions encountered, despite this we kept going. From 1973 we suddenly found ourselves with a home ground that was second to none in the county. From Division 6 in the O.C.A we have advanced steadily and now find ourselves competing well in the Cherwell League's top division.

Sunday's cricket was good, not an overs game, but for the first time in a number ofFine body of men.....spot the two over 25's seasons, a time game. In soaring temperatures this  relaxed format seemed more appropriate than the bish, bash stuff we now play on Sundays. A popular misconception amongst some in the gallery went straight out of the window. The M.C.C were not in fact a team of aged old boys in stripped blazers, but good, competent, youngish even  - cricketers. In fact, only a violent thunderstorm stopped them racking up a huge score.
Stef with on his alternative hangover cure!Almost two hours were lost and a declaration followed leaving us 193 runs in 45 minutes plus 20 overs. Pushing all the way, led by captain Holznagel, victory was possible with him at the crease. He was out a few runs short of another hundred and with his departure went the last vestige of victory.Skip with the soon to be Mrs. Skip

A first-rate day, indeed a typically English day and a big thanks to our visitors for their contribution. Gratitude from all the players and diners to our battery of volunteer caterers who worked hard for most of the day. We all look forward to another fixture .... without a thunderstorm next time.
