When they
arrived (in togas incidentally), Bledlow were top of the league and
looking to claim the title with a win on this final weekend. However,
we knew that having taken Wolverton to the wire a couple of weeks
earlier, if we played well we could cause an upset. A lot depended on
the start, and having been inserted, we could not have asked for
better... Maestro Meadows and Roger put on 209 for the first wicket in
less than 40 overs, silencing the opposition. However, both were out in
quick succession with Meadows having cruised to his fourth league
century (119) and Roger making 69. The new batsmen struggled to keep
the momentum,
Croney swung hard but the bowling was tough and we got up to 253-7 off
the 50 overs.
Again, the start of the chase would be crucial and after a minor
first-couple-of-overs hiccup, DuPlessis and Rey slammed the breaks on
the opposition. They picked up a couple of wickets, and then the
spinners Harries and Meadows joined in. The outfield was lightning
fast, but with the likes of the energetic Pill, Pepper and Harvey
prowling the boundaries (and the limping but determined Pritchard) the
pressure was always on the batsmen. Considerable spin was being
extracted with Rob bowling particularly well, and wickets were falling
at regular intervals despite the asking rate never being above 6. In
fact, a run-a-ball was required off the last 3 overs (with 3 wickets
left) and the Bledlow skipper came out blasting the ball over
midwicket, but Meadows got his revenge and then picked up the last 2 in
successive balls. Challow win by 12 runs with 8 balls left, with
Meadows, Rey and DuPlessis all claiming 3 wickets. Another great
all-round performance to end the season on a high.

With the toss out of our hands, Challow set about batting at
Buckingham on a grassy
wicket and instantly found scoring to be difficult. Of course, a lush
outfield didn’t help but the over-riding difficulty for us appeared to
be good, straight, wicket to wicket bowling. Lusty but streaky batting
from Benny Vanstone saw us to about 60 when the first wicket
fell. Fighting to wind up the total saw Challow lose further
wickets cheaply. Belated resistance from the Skipper increased the
total to 130 with 5 wickets and 5 overs left, and Phil Cox providing
support until a desperate dive for the crease saw him a foot or ten
short following a quick second run. A rapid collapse followed, not
helped by travelling with only 10, to leave us all out for 137.
Given the shortage of runs, a positive attitude was
required to pop a couple out early doors. Good opportunities in the
form of sharp catches came and went and the ground fielding would have
left the U13’s embarrassed. Inevitably, the total increased and left
little choice but to rotate the bowling but to no avail, as we did not
bowl as straight as the home team. Not unsurprisingly, victory was
snatched after about 30 overs, by 8 wickets. Great to be home
before 7pm when travelling to the ends of Buckingham to play!
25/8/07
Second team
A cracking
game, keenly contested, that was enjoyed by players and spectators
alike. Challow 2nds won the toss and batted first against Wolverton who
had won all their games so far this season. We hoped to post a big
total and exert some scoreboard pressure on the leaders, but after a very rare failure by
Maestro Meadows, Challow had to
grind the runs out instead. Up against a good bowling attack and
constricting fields, Roger Podbery provided the backbone to the innings
with 62, whilst Nigel Hume and
Justin Penrose chipped in with 30s. Wickets fell fairly steadily
though, and it was up to young Luke Russell to drag the score up to 213-7 off the 50 overs, with 31 from
just 18 balls. It was a below par score, but defendable, and some
reward for determined batting against difficult bowling.
Challow knew
that they must not let Wolverton get off to a good start, and the
opening pair of Rey (on debut) and DuPlessis duly responded by giving
very few scoring opportunities. They were backed by an excellent
fielding performance, from Harries, Russell and Meadows in particular.
The fielding pressure paid off when Challow were able to claim 3
run-outs in a 5 overs burst (2 direct hits!) but despite another good
spell from Russell, Wolverton never required more than 6 an-over.
Indeed they appeared favourites with less than 10 overs to go. But
Meadows claimed 2 wickets in successive balls with his off-spin and
Wolverton were left needing 18 from 18 balls with 2 wickets left.
Meadows and DuPlessis were still holding their nerve and the final
over, with all 4 results still possible, saw Wolverton needing 9 to
keep their 100% record, with 2 wickets left. A full toss claimed a
wicket, 9 down, and 6 were still wanted off 2 balls, but with the
field spread to prevent the boundary a shot fell agonisingly into
space. A swing and a miss saw the game end in a draw, with Challow
claiming the edge in points: a fantastic team performance.
18/8/07
Drizzled
all day and everyone was eventually rained off.
The first team game against
Leighton Buzzard was abandoned with Challow 45-1.
The second team game against
Didcot was abandoned (after a decent Challow start, then Didcot
fightback) with them at 153-3 (39overs).
11/8/07
Second team
Bicester
elected to bat on a what looked to be a belter of a track, and got off
to a flakey start with a steady stream of boundary’s coming mostly from
the edge inside the first 10 overs. They then tucked in to produce a
first wicket partnership of 138 (father and son incidentally),
maintaining a scoring rate of 5 an over throughout, aided by some
ordinary fielding. The opening spells of Mike K and Phil C failed
to make inroads, as Bicester batted positively, but their second spells
were more fruitful leaving Bicester with seven down for 290 off the
full 50 overs. Coxy bagged 4 tailenders, and Robbie Harries also struck
off the back of his 6-for at Brackley, but clearly this was a big total
despite the lightning fast outfield.
Niko Meadows and
Roger opened up with the intent to chase and were broadly successful in
keeping up with the required rate. Niko cruised on to score his third
hundred (102) in as many innings, but batsmen came and went with no-one
really providing extended support despite some nice starts. Challow
elected to continue the push with 8 overs to go and seven down -there
was an outside chance- but the inevitable collapse came as we folded to
227 all out, with the Konch stranded on 37no.
5/8/07
M.C.C. game
As part of the
clubs 60th Anniversary
celebrations we again hosted the MCC in a bi-annual fixture. The
weather played its part with the
hottest day of the year tempered by a
cooling breeze. The ground was in magnificent condition set off by a
marquee for
our guests that include founding players from 1947 and past members who
helped
establish the current ground.
As
ever the MCC skippered by Rupert Evans
batted first and despite an early wicket for occasional seamer Neil
Podbery all
the bowlers were put to the sword by opener Graham Charlesworth who
struck a
magnificent 139 and with Joe Porter (40) added 106 for the 3rd wicket.
A
very sporting declaration by the MCC at 246 for 4 from 51 overs set up
the
match perfectly.
The Challow
innings almost mirrored that of
the MCC and yet again the crowd were treated to another excellent
display of
batting as opener Nick Meadows also made a century. At the start of the
last
twenty overs Challow were 125 for 2 but with both Nick and Steve Burry
going
well, they added 147 for the 3rd wicket. Nick was eventually run out
for 124.
Thereafter Steve took over and steered Challow to a 7 wicket victory
with 8
balls to spare on an undefeated 71 not out. He was accompanied to
victory by
14 year old Nigel Hume who gave a brief glimpse of his talents with a
quick
fire 15 no.
4/8/07
First team
League leaders
Abingdon asked Challow to
bat first and we were yet again indebted to Aussie Michael Philipson
who top
scored with 53. This time however he was well supported by the rest of
the
batsman who chipped in with useful runs especially Owen Dimbylow with
27. However, the final total of 172 all out was a little
disappointing as spinner
Paul White worked his way through the team claiming 7 for 50.
Seeing that spin was
the best way to win
skipper Ian Demain opened the bowling and it paid immediate dividends
as with
fellow opener Olly Dimbylow they reduced Abingdon to 37 for 5. There
was no way
back for Abingdon who were eventually dismissed for 136 with Ian Demain
finishing
with 7 for 55 and Olly Dimbylow 3 for 33. This result lifts Challow
another
place up the table.
Second team
Despite the prospect of a warm trek
to
Brackley, a young Challow side set out with the determination to bring
12 or 13
points back from a game that would usually be ours for the taking. We
passed a
fellow cricketer on the A34 in whites, spikes, bag on back with a bat
poking
out the top (old skool style) ON A MOPED innit (photographic evidence
available).
Challow batted first on the
traditionally
difficult wicket that saw the ball doing odd things and also made it
very
difficult to score. Roger and Steve
Pritchard accumulated 50 odd between them with others chipping in to
bring the
total to a sub-standard 106.
The view at tea was to bring as
many points
home as possible given the low score-this we did with ruthless
efficiency. The
first 10 overs or so took some stick but Lano and Big Bird Dunc took it
on the
chin. A bowling change saw economy from
Wes with Robbie Harries taking a swift six fer using the unique surface
to
compliment his spin. Then, the process of taking some spectacular
catches and
rattling the sticks regularly began in earnest..
The best catches were seen from Wes on the boundary somewhere
and Tom
Pill accepted a skyer at square leg. Big Dunc ended up with at least a
three
fer that will have impressed the nice young lady he is currently
courting.
Having been 50 odd for 1, Brackley slumped
to the late 70’s all out-30 points in the bag. Robbie Harries
celebrated with
lager and felt peculiar on Sunday morning.

Second team
A
welcome return to winning ways for the 2nd XI against Princes
Risborough this week, which sees us up to 4th in the table. After
winning the toss, the PR skipper reluctantly chose to bat and almost
instantly regretted his decision as Olly Dimbylow knocked back his
middle stump inside the first over. This was to prove the start of a
rather attritional phase as both Olly and Mikey K bowled long probing
spells, limiting any scoring opportunities. Backed by good all-round
fielding (an amusing 'shy' at fine leg by Penrose notwithstanding), a
couple of wickets went down and it wasnt until after drinks, when the
score was barely over 50, that they tried to break out. Having
eventually prised the ball from Mike's hands, it was thrown to James
Mabbett who despite a wobbly couple of overs to start, was rewarded for
perseverance with the prize wicket of perhaps their best batsman...
trimming his off bail. Olly's 19-over spell was eventually ended, amid
rumours that the 1st XI skipper and coach were about to invade the
pitch to forcefully remove him from the attack for fear of burn-out,
and Robbie Harries arrived to mop up some of the tail. They ended on
156-9, some way short of what they would have liked, with the Konsch
the pick with 4-39 from 16 overs.
Nick Meadows and Ben Vanstone got the chase off to a healthy start, but
when Vanstone departed with the ball still nibbling around a bit, a
mini collapse saw Challow at 70-odd for 3. However, the bowling attack
faded as Maestro Meadows cruised to his second century of the season,
102no. No more wickets were lost, and fully 20-overs still remained
when the winning runs were thrashed through extra-cover.
Third team
Victory
for Wantage lifted them into third place with a game in hand.
Wantage were indebted to Simon Moulds with 61, as skipper Steve
Pritchard made the only other contribution with 23 in a final total of
142 all out.
After tea the Wantage
bowlers got to work and Ryan Martin did the early damage as he claimed
3 for 31 from his 12 overs. However, it was 15 year old Tom Pill that
secured victory as he took 4 for 14 from just 6.2 overs as Marsh Gibbon
were dismissed for 115 giving Wantage and Grove victory by 27 runs.

First team
After the
monsoon conditions of Friday
when the ground was under water nobody expected any play but the fast
draining
out field and the covers meant play started on time.
Challow won the
toss and took the brave
decision to insert fellow relegation candidates Morris Motors. Opener A
Shah
made 49 and with S Khan chipping in with 39 alongside M Abbasi with 41
in the
middle order Morris Motors were looking at a total in excess of 200 but
spinner
James Phillips with 5 for 36 and Mike Philipson with 4 for 43 ensured
that the
final total of 169 all out in the 44th
over was below par.
Rain
at tea delayed the Challow reply
which was initially reduced to 44 overs. Aussie opener Michael
Philipson
dominated matters and with Laurence Houghton (27) put Challow in an
excellent
position being ahead of the run rate and with wickets in hand. Another
rain
break further reduced the numbers of overs available to 38 and wickets
were
sacrificed in pursuit of quick runs as the weather closed in. Despite
the
continued hard work of the ground staff a final down pour after 27
overs
finished the match a Challow at 139 for 5 had to settle for a draw a
frustrating 31 runs short of victory. Michael Philipson top
scored with 82.

Second team
Challow made a
good start after winning
the toss as Aussie Mick Meadows and Ben Vanstone added 79 for the first
wicket.
However, when Nick was out for a quick fire 67 the run rate slowed.
Youngsters James
Phillips 41 and 14 year old Nigel Hume 40 added 73 for the 3rd wicket.
Thereafter as Challow pushed for quick runs wickets began to fall and
the final
total of 213 for 8 was not quite enough on an excellent batting wicket.
Slow
bowler G Pound claimed 4 for 32.
Stokenchurch’s
overseas player A Latif
was in a hurry as he raced to 63 before being caught behind but by this
stage
they were well ahead of the required run rate. M Maddock 38 and C Prime
34
edged them to victory but a flurry of late wickets kept the Challow
bowlers
interested but K Copenhale with 25no steered Stokenchurch to a 3 wicket
victory
with Duncan Wooloff claiming 3 for 66.
Third
Team
Luke Russell with 5 for 32
helped dismiss King Sutton inside 35 overs
for 152 despite the efforts of N Sellwood 32no and R Orme 30.
Wantage
made light work of this total as Francis Brown
and skipper
Steve Pritchard added 103 for the first wicket. When Francis was out
for 30
Steve was joined by James Mabbett and they ensured a very comfortable 9
wicket
victory in the 32nd over. Steve finished undefeated on 74 and James
25no.
07/7/07
Second team
An
unfamiliar Challow 2nd eleven won the toss and elected to bat
against a Bledlow Ridge side whose recent form and current position a
whole two divisions above suggested this would be a tough game, wait a
minute... Meanwhile, down the road at Bledlow Village, the actual
Challow 2nd team
were also batting first. Roger succumbed early on to a ball
that skidded on bringing Cronie to the crease. There then followed the
best partnership
of the innings with some swashbuckling batting from
Mark (49) and solid stroke play at the other end by OD. Apart
from a 47(no) from
a laconic Lynchy the rest of the Challow batsman did little
to trouble the scorers as we were bowled out for 172. Despite
feeling that there weren't enough runs on the board the bowlers stuck
to the task. Rob "bowlers don't get enough credit when they get 3
wickets" Harries was the pick of the bunch netting himself 4-54 with
some sublime bowling and one or two dodgy ones. Thanks to his efforts
there was a moment when it seemed that an unlikely victory could
be snatched from
the jaws of defeat but it was not to be as Bledlow managed
to get the runs with fives wickets down. Special mention should
be made for Rudi
and Coxy who both put their bodies on the line for the
cause, walking way with not insubstantial injuries. Tribute should also
be paid to Luke Jones's for his attempt to lift team morale by
repeatedly falling over his shoe laces in the field...classic. Two
broken ribs, a sore back, a torn stomach muscle, a burnt out clutch and
twelve points was all we could take away from Bledlow Ridge...sorry,
Village. Next week we face Stokenchurch at home. They lie one
above us in the league and it's time for the 2nd's to get back to
winning ways.
Third
Team
Wantage won
the toss and elected to bat on one of the nicest cricketing days in recent
weeks. Francis Brown (51) and Steve Pritchard (43) got Wantage off to a fine
start with a 100 partnership before Pritchard was out in the 29th over. West
Ilsley 2's hit back with some fine bowling, taking 5 wickets in 10 overs
before some fine agressive batting by James Mabbett (21 not out) and Luke
Russell (32 not out) saw Wantage to a competitive total of 196.
West
Ilsley 2's scored quickly in response, before some good fielding to produce a
run out and a wicket from Mabbett saw them at 62/2 after 16
overs. However,
Evans (51) and Siva (50) steadied the ship. Ryan Martin managed to remove Evan
immediately after he hit his 50, and some quick fielding by Wantage
produced two more run outs. However, captain Chris Benning (8*) and R Taylor
(9*) held their nerve to see West Ilsley 2's home in the 44th over with 4
wickets to spare.

Challow & Childrey stormed into the quarter-finals with
a convincing ten-wicket victory over Hanborough on Tuesday. Batting first, Hanborough scored 103 all out, with Matthew
Busby contributing 55. Michael Phillipson returned 3-13. Phillipson
then starred with the bat, making 57 not out as he and
opening partner Nick Meadows (40no) passed the target without loss to
earn a last-eight tie at home to Oxford Downs next Tuesday.

On what looked like a
good wicket, Tubes
finally did the right thing and lost the toss. Horspath chose to have a
bat. After taking a few early wickets, Challow looked good, Horspath
dug in, and got going with a couple of partnerships. They left it
a bit late to really push on, and with the standard of fielding higher
than previous weeks, they were restricted to 218-7, which everybody
felt was not enough on the Challow outfield. Mikey K bowled his best
spell of the year to date, ending up with 3 wickets, and Olly was his
usual dependable self. Stevo bowled well, although he has added a nice
grunt to his bowling action, is this a variation on the goodnight
ball?? Half the job done, and done well.
Then we came to bat.
This is probably
where this part of the report should end as it was, even by our
standards, pretty poor. Laurence and Olly were the only people who
showed that the pitch was good, and put on the best part of a 50
partnership, but being 64-8 when Olly came in, it was always asking a
lot. When Olly departed, leaving Laurence in the 40’s, it was game over
(no disrespect stevo!). With 7 of the side scoring 4 or less, it
was one of the performances (for most) to forget. We were taught a
lesson by our opposition with their batting. Lets hope we can learn
from it and take the positives from our fielding forward to next week.
Oh, and none of the first team even won at poker, winners were Adam
Tamplin (honestly table 1, what were you guys doing to let him win) and
John took the table 2 winnings.
Second

A hot and humid afternoon saw Challow win the toss against Bicester and
North Oxford 2nd and elect to bat on an average
looking wicket. Nick Meadows employed ballistic tactics to reach
128, ably supported by Nigel Hume on 59 not out. Challow raced to
270ish declaring with 2 overs carried forward.
The wicket played a lot better than it looked providing Challow with a
good opportunity to harness early movement off the seam. B & NO
lost two early wickets but then proceeded to chase admirably. At
drinks, they were 150 for 3.Rob Harries and Justin Penrose must have
taken their ‘Special Drinks’ as they decided to destroy the remaining
batsmen closing the Bicester innings at 178. JP returned 5 for 19
with RH buying 3 wickets for 60 odd….blimey.
Once again, a polished Challow performance which could only have been
made better with the rub of the green going our way in terms of half
chances etc. The team will look forward to making 30 points at
home on Saturday.
2/6/07
First Team
Only Steven Burry (47) could get going
in Challow's disappointing 159
all out, which Vale passed for the loss of four wickets.
Second Team
A
second wicket partnership of 101
between Roger Podbery and Mark Crone set the tone for a big Challow
total.
Roger Podbery was out for exactly 50 in the 34th over but Mark Crone
continued
the onslaught with some glorious shots and although he tired towards
the end of
the innings he made a magnificent 118, including 18 boundaries. A rapid
37 from
skipper Justin Penrose allowed him to declare after 49 overs with
Challow 261
for 7. Henry Newby toiled away to claim 4 for 75 from 18 overs.
Brackley
had no answer to Duncan Wooloff
who using every inch of his height bowled with aggression to claim 6
for 30
from 10.2 overs. Only opener D Beckett with 50 and a late flurry from
number 10
J Ayres with 30 gave the scoreline any respectability as Brackley were
shot out
for 109 inside 22 overs giving Challow victory by 128 runs.

Wantage
visited Chesterton who play in
Div 5 for this cup fixture. Chesterton opener D Holly dominated
their
innings with 63 but he received little support apart from J Mansfield
with 28 as
they were dismissed for 144 with Wantage youngsters to the fore. Ryan
Martin
claimed 4 for 15 and was well supported by Daniel Rey with 3 for 26 and
Adam
Taylor with 3 for 32.
It
was also an opening bat for Wantage
that laid the platform for victory as Simon Moulds top scored with 45.
That
took the pressure off the rest of the batsmen as youngsters Nick Burton
22 and
then Alex Pepper 18no and Daniel Rey 16no took Wantage to a 4 wicket
victory
with 7 overs to spare.
26/5/07
First Team
Challow's batsmen all struggled to
get going at home to Bourton Vale before they were all out for
176. Only James Phillips (35) managed a score of note.
Vale captain Nick Anderson continued his fine start to the season
by hitting 65 as the visitors cruised to a seven-wicket victory with 13
overs remaining.
Second Team
Challow
made the trip to Risborough with
an under strength side. Batting first Risborough made steady progress
and
importantly kept wickets in hand despite the best efforts of Phil Cox
who
reeled off 17 overs on the trot. A second wicket partnership of 126
between P
Strong 111no and A Morton 49 allowed Risborough to declare after 48
overs on
221 for 3.
Challow
needed one of the top four to
play a long innings and when this failed to materialise it was left to
Steve
Pritchard 45no and Phil Cox who batted with great restraint to ensure
that the
match finished in a draw as Challow limped to 127 for 5 in 52 overs.

In an amazing innings
no less than 7
noughts were recorded as complete embrassment was only saved by a half
century
from Ryan Martin and some good support from Colin Mercer with 23. They
were
finally dismissed for just 88 with R Slater claiming 4 for 8. Things did not get
any better after tea
as C Taylor hit 56 as Shrivenham cruised to a 9 wicket victory inside
28overs.

Motors won the toss and inserted us
on a pitch that had several damp patches on a length. If it had been at
Challow Stef
would have certainly pulled up the stumps and taken them home!
However even
though we lost Phillips and Nobby early doors, the Oz began to stamp
his
authority after getting used to the slowness of the pitch and getting
his chin
up. He was supported first by Loz and then by Buzzer in our best
partnership of
the match; Buzzer took the initiative and attacked the bowling before
being caught
on the boundary for 37. Philipson continued his merry march to a
hundred and
was finally dismissed for 102. The lower order managed to push the
total up to
220 exactly, even though Stevens was unable to walk the walk after
talking the
talk as he was dismissed first ball.
Motors
reply never got going and they lost
their first wicket with the total on one. None of the batsmen were able
to
score freely off the Challow opening attack of Dimbylow and Philipson.
Both of
the opening bowlers ended up with four wickets each as they decimated
Motors
top order leaving them 12 for 7. Even though Motors had some sort
of recovery
they were shot out for just 38 with Stevens taking the final wicket to
end a
memorable day in the field for Challow
Man
of the match would have to be Philipson
for his hundred and four wickets. DOTD- Lee Stevens, but if
Philipson wears
those pink cycling shorts again.....

Toss won by Challow and Childrey 2nds
Oxford Downs II batted first: 224 for 7 (50 Overs) N. Pearson 59,
M.Watts 66 R. Du Plessis 3-71
Challow and Childrey II batted second: 225-5 (46 overs) N. Meadows 73, Owen Dimbylow 72*, R.
Berryman 4-66
Challow and Childrey II: 30pts Oxford Downs II: 15pts
Having considered the damp pitch and the mixed weather forecast,
Challow opted to insert Oxford Downs in the hope of chasing down a
modest total. However, despite excellent opening spells from both
Cox
and Du Plessis the anticipated assistance from the pitch failed to
materialise... along with any rush of wickets. Downs top order
batted
well and although young Luke Jones put in a promising 5 overs, they
were
well placed at 180-odd for 3 with 10 overs to go. But Challow had
fielded well all game and generated pressure and run-out opportunities
which, together with the return of the opening bowlers, restricted
Downs to 224-7 off their allotted 50 overs. Rudi finished with 3
wickets, and a very sore Sunday to look forward to, from his 18 overs.
The reply was given instant momentum by a century
opening partnership
between Nick Meadows and Owen Dimbylow. Meadows smashed 73, but
when he was
dismissed Dimbylow then settled into a steady focal role for the
innings. He
was ably supported by Nigel Hume, and between them they kept the asking
rate to about 4-rpo. Downs were only briefly able to exert any
pressure, thanks to Dimbylow's patient accumulation, and when they did
eventually get a couple of wickets it was almost too late. To settle
the matter though, Will Harvey crashed the remaining runs in his usual
manner to leave 4 overs remaining, and Dimbylow 72 not out.

42no) v Tiddington - rsp.
The League season began under leaden skies at Vicarage Hill.
Electing to bat first on typical early season seamer, Challow’s
progress was fitful. The early loss of Changi Phillipson for 17
slowed the early upbeat tempo with Tiddington seamers, Richardson and
Hollingshead using the friendly conditions to nibble the ball
around. With James Phillips remaining solid, but shackled, Nobby
Penney rode his early luck and then elected to go airborne with some
heavy blows. Under darkening skies, Phillips departed for 10 and
after a break for rain, Houghton went for 15. More rain followed,
and with the threat of the stumps being thrown away with numerous empty
bottles of Peroni, play was ended with Challow on 92 –3, Nobby unbeaten
on 42. A short day resulted in the Weapon of the Day award
deservedly going to the Skipper for forgetting his playing
underwear. Despite having a lot on his mind, there is excuse for
leaving the ground during play in order to rectify poor kit admin.
